Farewell, 2013
I’ve always loved the idea of starting fresh; of turning the page. As philosopher Soren Kierkegaard said, “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
This year, our family decided to pass a quiet New Year’s Eve at home. As I was preparing to welcome in the new year, I decided to reflect back on 2013, and to include my family in this reflection process as well. Around our dinner table, before the four of us dove into our seafood pasta (yum), I proposed that we go around and answer the questions:
1. What’s one thing I am grateful for in 2013?
2. What’s one thing I am hopeful for in 2014?
Here are my responses:
Reflecting on 2013, I am most grateful to have regained my health after having endured two surgeries and radiation therapy on my breast. As bullet points, I am grateful for yoga’s teachings on faith and surrender that reside deep inside of me and offered me sustenance. I am grateful for my circle of family and friends that extended support to me - I learned that support takes many forms. And I am grateful for my own resilient spirit.
The thing that I am most hopeful for in 2014 has to do with my dharma – my life purpose, that which is closest to my heart. I believe I am here to compassionately help and serve others. Through living and teaching, both on and off the mat, my hope for 2014 is to bring to light more and more of who I fully am. In order to do this, I am committed to furthering my own self-study (svadyaya). We practice yoga to know ourselves, and I hope to inspire you to do the same.
