What is Relational Somatic Healing?
"There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen."
– Rumi
Somatic means dealing with the body. Relational Somatic Healing is an integrated approach to counselling that addresses body, mind and spirit. In a relational somatic counselling session, emphasis is placed on the relationship between myself and the client. Human beings are relational at their core. I believe that we heal best in the context of a safe relationship where we are witnessed by a trusted other. My approach is described as warm, nurturing, and non-judgemental
I see myself as a guide, educator and facilitator of change. I bring a spirit of curiosity to my work with clients. Through the process of developing a therapeutic relationship with me, clients come to understand themselves “in relationship.” Sessions are a combination of talking and experiencing, as it is helpful to embody concepts and ideas. A client's work is often to explore the defences and coping mechanisms that have kept them safe, while also restricting their growth and freedom.
I work with individuals who are experiencing:
stress
illness
exhaustion
grief
trauma
anxiety
depression
addiction
relationship issues
life transitions
What is unique about relational somatic counselling is that we don’t just discuss issues; a client will be guided to use their body and breath to discover new insights and ways of being.
Modalities used to facilitate awareness and change may include:
Authentic, non-violent communication
Psycho-education
Mindfulness
Intention setting
Yogic philosophy
Movement and postural exercises
Breathing
Psychodrama
Guided Visualization
Inner Child Healing
Focusing
Relaxation
Journaling
How This Works
Relational somatic healing takes time and is a process. Change happens gradually as we establish a trusting relationship and explore issues and patterns that are deeply ingrained and block expansion. I recommend that we meet with regular frequency on an ongoing basis, especially in the beginning. Personal growth is a commitment and healing is more likely to come about when you attend sessions regularly. Our relationship is collaborative in nature and we will move at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Sessions are typically one hour in duration.
Wear comfortable clothing.
I see clients at 418 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 301 on Tuesdays and Fridays. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays I see clients at 889 Community in a private studio.
